Pamela Jo Bondi, known publicly as Pam Bondi, is an American lawyer and Republican politician who in February 2025 became the 87th Attorney General of the United States. She had previously served two terms as Attorney General of Florida between 2011 and 2019.
Florida years
Bondi began her legal career as an assistant state attorney in Tampa, where she worked for almost two decades on violent-crime and homicide prosecutions. She was elected Florida's Attorney General in 2010 as part of the Tea Party wave, becoming the first woman to hold the office.
In Florida she pursued a high-profile agenda on opioid-related litigation, joining multi-state actions against pharmaceutical distributors, and supported the state's legal challenges to the Affordable Care Act.
Trump impeachment defence and lobbying
After leaving state office in 2019 Bondi joined the lobbying firm Ballard Partners and was part of Donald Trump's defence team during his first impeachment trial in 2020. Her closeness to the Trump operation made her a recurring name in the second-term cabinet speculation that began in 2024.
Nomination and confirmation
President-elect Trump nominated Bondi to lead the Department of Justice in November 2024 after his initial choice, Matt Gaetz, withdrew. Senate Judiciary Committee hearings in January 2025 focused on her independence from the White House, her position on the prosecutions of Trump and on the planned DOJ restructuring. The full Senate confirmed her on a party-line vote, and she was sworn in on 5 February 2025.
What she has done in office
Bondi's early months as Attorney General have been dominated by personnel changes inside the Department, the discontinuance of certain federal cases and a high-profile reorganisation of DOJ press operations. She has also addressed several state attorneys-general gatherings, where she previously sat as a peer.
Why people search for her
Search interest in Bondi rises around DOJ announcements, congressional testimony and any case in which the Department's position changes from the Biden-era line. Readers typically arrive looking for biographical context, what she did before, why she was chosen and what she actually controls.
